We all have hectic lifestyles and sometimes it can be a difficult task to switch off. Especially at night. I can t tell you how many times I have been lying in bed staring at the ceiling because it is such a hard job to switch your brain off at night. That was last month. A friend had mentioned to me one day over lunch that I should try taking sometime to myself to meditate and let me tell you it has worked wonders. Many people think little trees and raking sand when it comes to meditation but nothing could be further than the truth. Mediation is simple and easy to get started and you will feel the benefits from the first time you try it. It can help you to understand some of the problems you are facing, lower your stress levels, connect with your partner and family members better, improve your focus and reduces the doubts in your head.
Let me give you a quick and easy way to start your journey through meditation today. It goes without saying but this works best in a quiet environment. I wait until the kids are in bed and my partner is on the sofa watching whatever YouTube video is cool this week and I head up to the bedroom. This bit is not for everyone but I feel it works a lot better if I am naked or at least I have removed any restricting clothes and got myself into a comfy pair of jammies.
Lie back on the bed on top of the covers with your feet apart and your hands by your side. The trick to this is having no body parts touching so having your legs crossed is a big no no. take in deep steady breathes 5 seconds in and 5 seconds out expanding your chest rather than lifting up your shoulders and try to focus on nothing but your toes. Once you can feel the sensation in your toes while ignoring the rest of your body slowly start to move upwards to a different body part like your ankled, then your calves, knees thighs and so forth until you reach the top of your head. This whole process should take around 10-15 minutes but truth be told by the time I reach my elbow I am usually in a truly meditative state.
The first time you reach this state you might not understand how you have reached this point. It is difficult to describe but you will feel light and your mind will be quiet. When coming out of this state it is best to tell yourself you are going to wake up and count backwards slowly from 10 before opening your eyes and there you have it. Trust me this will change your life.
